Meditation As Medication

One of the best things you can do to improve your health is to start a meditation practice. Now before you roll your eyes, hear me out. I get it. We’re all super busy with families, jobs, and other obligations.

And to top it off, we live in a world that values 24-7 accessibility and expects us to be available through our devices at all times. But the truth is, if you have time to check your social media every day, then you have 5 minutes to meditate – and that’s all you really need!

Your Faith Matters

It can be frustrating or overwhelming when you first try it. There are so many types of meditation – Zen, Transcendental, Kundalini Yoga, Mindfulness, etc. But there’s a misperception that you have to do it a certain way, and you really don’t.

I have the same belief about meditation as I do about faith.

Your faith is the most personal thing there is and you should choose it and define it for yourself. As long as you connect with something greater than yourself – whether you call it God, Universe, Allah, or Spirit – it doesn’t matter whether you do it through organized religion or spiritual practice you create for yourself. It just matters that you do it in a way that’s meaningful for you and feeds your soul.

The Ways You Can Meditate

The same goes for meditation. It doesn’t matter how you do it. You don’t need to sit in the lotus position – heck, you don’t even need to sit at all. My favorite way to meditate is walking. If your mind races (which it will), then just let those thoughts cross through your mind.

For some people, it helps to repeat a word or a mantra, and others prefer to just focus on their breath. There’s really no wrong way to do it and the benefits are many. I start my morning this way for 5-10 minutes before I turn on any device and it helps me set my intention for the day and start in a relaxed (parasympathetic) state.

Get Back To The Basics And Meditate

When we go through health challenges, we often become fixated on what to eat, or what drugs or supplements to take (and rightfully so).

But I have found both personally and professionally, that one of the best things you can do is get back to basics and just sit with yourself every day.

One of my favorite sayings is “If you don’t take time for your wellness, then you will be forced to make time for your illness.” Trust me – I’ve done the leg work!
